Make Their First Visit to the Dentist A Positive One

Eventually the day will come when you have to take your child to the dentist. It is recommended that you take your child when he is an infant to ensure his teeth are ready to come through properly and to get him acquainted with being in the dentist's environment. Waiting for an emergency will only cause the visit to be panicked and full of fear since chances are your child is in pain and will most likely have to endure more before the healing begins. At CT Pediatric Dentistry we want your first visit to the dentist to be a positive one so we offer some tips for preparing.

Talk to your Child

If your child is old enough to understand what you are saying it is important to speak to them before taking them to the dentist. Trying to trick kids into thinking they are going someplace fun can backfire and leave you with a very unhappy and distrustful child. When you explain to your boy or girl that they have to see a dentist in order to avoid painful conditions with their teeth you have a much better chance of winning over their trust and getting them to understand that oral hygiene is important.

Emphasize the Need for Visiting a Dentist

Visiting a dentist isn't just about drills and root canals. Too often the misconception is reinforced that going to the dentist is something bad. When you express to your child that the dentist is there to help and prevent pain your child will start to understand why they need to make regular visits. Kids that have healthy teeth and avoid bad eating habits often find their visits to be quick and painless and don't mind returning. Make your child aware that they in large part determine how easy their visits will be.

The more calm you are and how you use gentle persuasion will determine how successful the first visit to a dentist goes. Avoid making it seem like an ordeal or something bad since children are very intuitive and if they sense you are apprehensive, they will be too.
