Is a Manual or Electric Toothbrush Better for Your Child?

Pick Out A Toothbrush Your Child Will Like

Many parents struggle to get their children to brush their teeth. Particularly with young children, toothbrushing can be a daily struggle filled with frustration for both adult and child. You can make the process easier by picking out a toothbrush your child will like and making the experience fun.

One of the most common questions parents have is whether they should use a manual or electric toothbrush. There are advantages to each type.

A manual toothbrush might allow you to brush your child’s teeth more efficiently since it lets you scrub back and forth and brush several teeth at once. This can be a big help if your child is impatient and squirms. Some electric toothbrushes only clean one tooth at a time, but an electric brush might be able to do a better job of cleaning if your child can sit still long enough. You can try both kinds of toothbrushes with your child and see which one he or she likes better.

No matter what type of toothbrush you decide to use, make sure it has the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval. This means the brush will last for a minimum period of time and is safe for use in children.

Choose a brush with soft, rounded bristles that will be gentle on your child’s teeth and gums. Select a brush with a head and handle that are appropriate sizes for your child. The head needs to fit comfortably in your child’s mouth, and the handle should be large enough for your child to hold and control if your child brushes his or her own teeth.

Make brushing fun for your child. You can buy a brush that has a picture of your child’s favorite cartoon character or that lights up or plays music. You can also sing a song while brushing. This will make toothbrushing fun and will also let your child know how long to brush.
